A serial communication card that plugs into the control panel to open an optically isolated port for communication with external equipment. It is the standard means of getting system data out of the panel and into another system. The most common use is connecting the panel to an event printer, to a building management system, or to fire graphics software that shows the location of an event on a floor plan of the building. That last case is the one that changes how an incident is handled in practice, because it turns a line of text on a panel display into a marked point on a drawing that a security officer understands immediately, without needing to know how the addresses were assigned during commissioning. Connection is by plug-in without any soldering, and the optical isolation protects the panel circuitry from transient voltages arriving from the third-party equipment at the far end of the cable. An RS485 variant of the same card family is used instead where a multi-drop peripheral bus or a panel network is required rather than a single point-to-point serial link.
