A fire alarm system does not operate in isolation from the rest of the building. When a fire is confirmed, air handling units have to shut down, door holders have to release, and lifts have to be sent to the ground floor. The modules in this category are the link that turns a panel decision into a real electrical command on that equipment.
An output module provides either a single alarm circuit or a dry Form C relay contact, and it can be configured to supervise the wiring to the external load or the voltage of its power supply, raising a fault condition if that voltage drops below threshold. A zone monitor module works the other way round, allowing a zone of conventional non-addressable devices to be brought into an addressable installation. That is the practical answer when an existing site is being upgraded without replacing every device on it at once.
